Is your skin barrier damaged?
Recently in clinic I have been seeing lots of clients with skin barrier issues and they are a variety of ages. So let's look at what skin barrier is and how we can repair it.
What Is the Skin Barrier?
Your skin barrier (also known as the stratum corneum) is your skin’s outermost layer. Think of it as your protective shield, keeping hydration in and irritants out. When functioning well, your skin will feel smooth, well hydrated, calm with fewer breakouts and a more even texture. If you start to feel your face become dry or tight, sensitivite or stinging when you apply products, have unusual or consistent breakout, redness or inflammation, then your skin barrier is likely to be compromised.
What Causes Barrier Damage?
There are many different reasons for barrier breakdown, often its not just a single thing and can take time and consistent review to work out why. In clinic, the most common triggers I see are:
Overuse of acids and active ingredients.
Incorrect home skincare routines.
Environmental stress (cold weather, wind, central heating).
Hormonal fluctuations.
Over-cleansing or harsh products.
Stress and lack of internal support (sleep, nutrition).
The good news is it can be repaired with the right approach.
How to Repair Your Skin Barrier
Repairing the barrier is not about doing more it’s about doing the right things consistently. Barrier repair starts by simplifying your skincare routine and introducing supportive products, focusing on calming, hydrating, and rebuilding. The reality of barrier repair is there is no quick fix, the results aren't instant and it is often less exciting than active heavy routines. But, it is the foundation of good long term skin health, you can’t build healthy, glowing skin on a compromised barrier.
What do I suggest at Luxueux Skin Clinic Corby?
If you follow me on social media, you will have heard me talk about the 80/20 split. This is the approach I take to all skin health and treatment jounrneys. 80% of our results come from the foundations of what we consistently do everyday at home. Skincare, water intake and nutrition. A good basic skincare rountine can provide far superior results to a trend led ‘glass skin’ serum! 20% we build in clinic with a long term treatment plan the continues to support barrier function, while aiming to get your skin where we all want it to be… Glowing!
Home: Your Foundation (This Is Your 80%)
1. Strip It Back.
Pause strong actives temporarily - retinols, exfoliating acids, harsh cleansers.
2. Gentle rebuilding.
Focusing on simple cleansing and locking in moisturise, with low-irritation formulations designed to calm and rebalance. At Luxueux I will guide clients towards the Clinicare Pure Range, especially when skin is sensitive, acne-prone or inflamed, as it supports healing without overloading the skin.
Lipids are natural fats in your skin that keep it hydrated, strong and protected. They stop water escaping and help defend against irritation. When your lipid levels are low, your skin can feel dry, tight, sensitive and more prone to breakouts
Ceramides are essential lipids that make up your skin barrier. When depleted, your barrier weakens. This make Ceramides part of the rebuilding process.
One of my go-to staples is the NuSkin Ceramide Pump
✔️ Lightweight but deeply restorative
✔️ Replenishes lost lipids
✔️ Strengthens barrier function
✔️ Supports long-term skin resilience
This is not just a moisturiser — it’s a barrier-repair tool.
If your skin is compromised, this becomes a non-negotiable daily step.
3. SPF — Always
A damaged barrier is more vulnerable to UV damage, therefore daily SPF isn’t optional, it's essential and part of the repair process.

Microneedling (when appropriate)
→ Helps strengthen and rebuild the skin long-term (only when barrier is ready).
